IMAP vs POP Print

Register Domain Africa provides internet-based mail accounts, this means your custom mailbox can be configured on your local mail application of choice or can be accessed directly via the webmail i.e https://yourdomainhere.africa/webmail

When you perform a local configuration you will be prompted to choose between protocols IMAP or POP, each protocol comes with its own set of Pros and Cons.

IMAP:

IMAP is a great choice when a user requires a server-side backup of their mail as IMAP works in constant sync with your local mail application.
Therefore if the local device were to become corrupted, you could simply reconfigure the mailbox to pull all mail stored on the server.

The downside to IMAP is it will consume more server-side storage as time progresses there may be a need to delete unwanted mail or perform an upgrade to a larger plan for additional space.

POP:

POP is a perfect choice for the user that is space-conscious as POP accounts do not leave a copy of your mail on the server and pull the mail directly to an individual device.

The benefit to this server-side disk space won't be used to store email data, however, POP comes with its own set of drawbacks.

Should the local mail application become corrupted, there will not be a server-side data restore available, therefore it is essential that POP accounts users routinely make local backups of their mail. Also, it is not advised to use the POP protocol when using your mailbox on more than one device as it can lead to sync anomalies.
